Page: 1 Entered: 30 Aug, 2015 Modified: 2 Sep, 2015 Wittgenstein's keyword language-game (Sprachspiel) will suggest that 'gamification' of our social existence and the language as our means of communication have evolved hand in hand. "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent," concluded Wittgenstein. But we CAN speak and think in new ways Ð provided that we develop the capability to liberate our language, and ourselves, from our 'games'. Page: 2 Entered: 2 Sep, 2015 Modified: 2 Sep, 2015 The language is meant to serve for communication between a builder A and an assistant B. A is building with building-stones: there are blocks, pillars, slabs and beams. B has to pass the stones, in the order in which A needs them. For this purpose they use a language consisting of the words "block", "pillar" "slab", "beam". A calls them out; Ñ B brings the stone which he has learnt to bring at such-and-such a call. Conceive this as a complete primitive language. (PI 2.)[3] Page: 3 Entered: 2 Sep, 2015 Modified: 2 Sep, 2015 We find in Britannica's Philosophy Pages: "Like the rules of a game, Wittgenstein argued, these rules for the use of ordinary language are neither right nor wrong, neither true nor false: they are merely useful for the particular applications in which we apply them. The members of any communityÑcost accountants, college students, or rap musicians, for exampleÑdevelop ways of speaking that serve their needs as a group, and these constitute the language-game (Moore's notes refer to the "system" of language) they employ. Human beings at large constitute a greater community within which similar, though more widely-shared, language-games get played. Although there is little to be said in general about language as a whole, therefore, it may often be fruitful to consider in detail the ways in which particular portions of the language are used." http://www.philosophypages.com/hy/6s.htm
